The perfect choice for Valentine's Day, our Raspberry Cream Pie is topped with homemade raspberry gel for a picture perfect treat.

This pie begins with our rich, creamy vanilla base used in all our cream pies. Then we top it with our home made raspberry gel (with less seeds). Our signature pastry heart dipped in chocolate ganache. This is a picture perfect pie and a great suggestion for Valentine’s Day.

Our Raspberries are IQF (individually quick frozen), which helps preserve the freshness of the berry. Raspberries are high in Vitamin C and K, and one of the highest fiber fruits known. Raspberries rank very high for their antioxidant content which helps fight cancer. You can find raspberries in black, red, purple and yellow varieties. They are grown on farms and can be found and picked in the wild. The raspberry plant grows 4-5 feet, have smaller thorns on the entire plant.

For the record, the Pie Lady thinks pie tossing is a waste of great pastry.

No one knows for sure when it started, but people have been putting pies in the faces of other people for a long time. Maybe since the first pies were baked there have been disgruntled folks around who decided to toss the creations at their enemies.

At least by the 1920s, there were vaudeville acts who specialized in pie tossing. The Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, and the Three Stooges built entire routines around the idea. By the 1960s, as civil unrest became more prominent in the United States in reaction to the war in Vietnam and Civil Rights, there were people shoving pies in the faces of their targets.

Here are five of the more famous pie tossing incidents.

1. G. Gordon Liddy
Often Conservatives have been targets of pie-throwing (though see #5 for a notable exception). Liddy was one of many who were targeted by Vietnam-era activist Aron Kay in the 1970s. The former Watergate burglar was nailed at a press conference in 1977. Liddy didn’t take too kindly to the pastry assault – he pounced on Kay. Liddy later said, “He’s lucky we weren’t in a dark alley.”

2. Calvin Klein
How does a tofu creme pie look with a designer t-shirt and jeans? Famed designer Calvin Klein should know after he was nailed with a pie at a fashion awards show in 2011. Klein was targeted by anti-fur activists. The fashion icon enjoyed the rest of his evening, albeit with morsels of tofu on his outfit.

3. Bill Gates
This was one of the most celebrated pieing incidents perpetrated by famous “pie thrower” Noel Godin, a Belgian writer, critic, and actor. He apparently targeted Gates because the software billionaire was getting too “haughty”. As Gates entered a meeting hosted by Flemish Minister and President Van den Brande in Brussels, Godin stepped forward and tossed creme pies in his face. When he was finished, Godin reportedly said, “My work is finished here.” Gates was startled but tried to react casually later, saying, “The pie just wasn’t all that good.” Godin claims his goal has long been to “entarte” as many people like Gates as possible – people he feels are particularly self-important and lacking a sense of humor. Since 1969, when Godin planted a cream pie on the face of the French novelist Marguerite Duras, he has cream-pied dozens more, including choreographer Maurice Béjart, France’s best-known television anchorman Patrick Poivre d’Arvor, French president Nicolas Sarkozy and film maker Jean-Luc Godard.

4. Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden
Even royalty can be targets! While visiting a bird sanctuary in his native Sweden in 2001, King Carl and his entourage were surprised when a 16-year old boy squeezed through the crowd and tossed a strawberry tart in the monarch’s face. It was a direct hit. The King wasn’t hurt, but certainly embarrassed. Adding to the embarrassment, the King’s wife, Queen Silvia, helped wrestle the boy to the ground. The King did not comment on the quality of the pie.

5. U.S. Senator Carl Levin
The longtime Senator from Michigan was in his home state meeting citizens in Big Rapids in 2010 at a popular deli, when a woman approached and pelted him with a dutch apple pie. “She took the pie in both hands and slammed it in his face,” said an onlooker. According to authorities, the incident was an anti-war demonstration for the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. Levin was fine, and the woman was quickly whisked away in a police car. “Amazingly, he was quite gentlemanly and kept his composure and was fairly good nattered about it,” said the owner of the deli.

Mark Twain
Probably no other American wrote as many words about pie as Mark Twain, the sage of letters and author of some of the classics of American literature. Huckleberry Finn, one of American literature’s most famous characters, took his name from one of Twain’s favorite desserts – huckleberry pie. Twain so loved pies that he often ate half a pie pie for lunch and finished it off for dinner. He published his own recipes, and according to his housekeeper, when in bouts of depression, the only thing he would consume would be an ice-cold bottle of milk and his favorite pie, fresh from the oven. In addition to huckleberry, Twain enjoyed blueberry pie. But his ultimate favorite was what he called “apple mush pie”. It was made by pouring sweet applesauce into a pie filling and covering it with thin pastry crust. The author preferred his with whipped topping.

Soupy Sales
Probably no other person ever received as many pies in the face as did Soupy Sales. Born Milton Supman, he was an American comedian, actor, radio-TV personality and host. He was best known for his local and network children’s television show, Lunch with Soupy Sales, a series of comedy sketches frequently ending with Sales receiving a pie in the face, which became his trademark. Sales got his television start in Detroit.

Harold “Pie” Traynor
In a survey of baseball historians in 1969, Traynor was selected as the greatest third baseman in baseball history. Born Harold Joseph Traynor in Framingham, Massachusetts, little Harry received his nickname as a child in Somerville, Massachusetts because he frequented a grocery store and often asked for pie. The store owner called him “Pie Face”, which was later shortened to Pie by his friends. Traynor played in the major leagues from 1920 to 1937, exclusively for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a wonderful batter, hitting .320 in his career, but we was mostly known for his defensive play at third base. He revolutionized play at the “hot corner” by playing farther off the bag and into the shortstop hole than most previous players. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1948. By all accounts, he carried his affinity with pie throughout his life.

Diamond Jim Brady
If Twain was the master of pie words, and Sales was the master taking them in the face, then Brady was the master pie glutton. During America’s Guilded Age, Brady was a prominent financier and businessman. He was also legendary for his appetite. It was not unusual for Brady to eat enough food for ten people at a sitting. he would often consume 4-5 pies at a sitting. George Rector, owner of one of Brady’s favorite restaurants, described Brady as “the best 25 customers I ever had.”[

Jeffrey Hudson
A very obscure, strange fellow from history, Hudson was once “baked” into a pie himself! He was famous as the “Queen’s dwarf” and “Lord Minimus”, and was considered one of the “wonders of the age” because of his extreme but well-proportioned smallness. He stood just a tad taller than three feet as an adult. In 1626, on his seventh birthday, Hudson was presented to the Duchess of Buckingham as a “rarity of nature” and she invited him to join the household. A few months later the Duke and Duchess entertained King Charles and his young French wife, Queen Henrietta Maria in London. The climax of the lavish banquet was the presentation of Jeffrey to the Queen, served in a large pie. When the pie was placed in front of the Queen, Jeffrey arose from the crust, 18 inches tall and dressed in a miniature suit of armour. The Queen was delighted and the Duke and Duchess of Buckingham offered Hudson to her as an amusing gift.

Munson Manor is a non-profit Hospitality House affiliated with our local hospital, Munson Medical Center. The Manor provides a place for people to stay at a reduced rate while their loved ones are either in the hospital or the Hospice House.

As donations become available the Manor tries to provide meals and snacks for those who stay there. For years now I have been taking pies to the Manor and on one occasion I was stopped by a guest.

“Ma’am, are you the pie lady?”, she asked.

“Um, yes” I responded. “I work in the Grand Traverse Pie Company.”

“Well I just can’t thank you enough for bringing your pies here,” she stated.

“You’re very welcome,” I said.

“No!” she replied, “You don’t understand what this meant to my family – what comfort it has brought!”

“Really?” I said, curious as to why she was so adamant.

Her story unfolded: she and her family had come to support her brother as he was dying at the Hospice House. The previous week his mother-in-law had come to offer support as well and dropped dead of a heart attack! On top of that her uncle does the day after her brother passed away!

With one tragedy after another, I couldn’t even comprehend it all. At that moment she pointed out the 90-year old gentlemen in the dining room. It was her father, who had just lost his son and his brother and was now nestled in for the evening having a slice of pie. She literally begged me to go back to the shop and thank whoever had a hand in making, baking, and providing the pies they had enjoyed and gained so much comfort from during their stay. I was humbled.
